The Comeback

There is a LL Cool J song with the lyrics, “Don't call it a comeback, I been here for years”. I know this because it is often played during cardio tennis. It resonates with me - the idea of longevity, sticking to it and being a presence through the years. Let’s be honest though - many of us do falter and do have comebacks.

This weekend I ran a 10K race - that’s 6.2 miles. When I lived in Lexington, I used to race regularly. Since moving to AZ and the busy-ness of life I’ve fallen off of that. It had been two years since I had competed in running races prior to this month. My mileage is also not what it once was. All of that showed in my results.

It wasn’t a surprise but for a moment I was disppointed that this is where I am at verses where I have been. But I decided to use that to motivate me. I am calling it comeback!

I hear it regularly from new students - something occurred or changed and they fell off their workout routine. At the end of the day, it’s not worth dwelling on the why and feeling bad about it. That’s the past. Focusing on the goal, where you are and what you need to do is more productive.

I know I can improve and I also know how to do that, It’s going to require some work on my part, some discipline and consistency. If I want it enough, I’ll get there. I heard a quote this morning as I was getting ready to head to the studio that really resonated with me. “Discipline will carry you forward when motivation does not”. How much do you want it - enough to commit to your comeback??
