BAck Pain

As we wrap up another snowbird season and I come up for air, I realize it’s been a minute since my last blog. It’s something I enjoy doing but when the studio gets so busy, it is something that can be put on hold. We love our snowbirds and miss them when they are gone but now is a chance to play catch up!

Another reason I’ve delayed posting a new blog is because I hurt my back. As a Pilates instructor that is hard to admit!

Pilates is not

I was recently in Cincinnati visiting friends and family and had the opportunity to take Pllates classes at two different studios. This is something I love to do when I travel. It’s fun to be the student and to try new studios and new teachers. Usually, I have a great experience and walk away with a new cue or new sequence I want to bring back to my studio. And I am happy to report that was the case this weekend. Occasionally, however, I have a less than great experience and I attribute this to the class not really being Pilates!

So what is Pilates?

Celebrate the Small Wins

Recently in the studio i’ve heard the following statements from some of our students:

“I know I’ve only been coming here a month but already my back feels better and I can tell a difference!”

“At the beginning of class I couldn’t come near touching my toes, by the end I was almost there and that makes me think it’s possible!”

“I never thought I’d be able to do a Plank and here I am doing it!”

Pilates with my Dad

Earlier this year my Dad came for a visit and he stayed with me about an eight days. My usual routine is to workout in the morning before going to the studio. He began making cracks about the ‘heavy breathing’ (my Pilates breath!) coming from the office. My Dad is a jokester!

Ageless

One of the activities I’ve picked up since moving to Arizona is tennis. It’s something I’ve wanted to do for years but it just didn’t fit my schedule until now. Lately, I’ve been devoting a lot of free time to practicing, matches, and lessons. I am certain my Pilates practice is helping me as well! I always say Pilates prepares you for everything else!

Answering Your Questions

There are some common questions I am asked at the studio and today I thought I would answer them for anyone reading. I always welcome your questions as they make me consider a different perspective sometimes or confirm that where we are is where we should be! So here we go:

Q: Why Don’t You Offer Your Classes in Levels?

Mind Body Connection

Lately, I’ve been learning the game of tennis. I’ve been taking lessons and working on my serve. This motion is so foreign to me. Serving is not a natural motion. While I understand the physics of it, my body is trying all kinds of cheats to make it easier. Thank goodness for videos because I can see what I am doing wrong.

Expectations

Like most of you - I have high expectations for myself. I want to succeed and achieve my goals. This can be a great quality when it comes to working hard, following a plan, and succeeding in life. It is also something that needs to be kept in check when learning something new. It’s not realistic to try something new and be a pro!

That is where our expectations don't match reality.
